Oakville has a new rising star. Rachel Simmons of Oakville High School has been named a 2024 Washington STEM Rising Star.
Rachel was one of eleven students from across the state chosen to receive the annual award. Washington STEM highlights her work with the Chehalis tribal fisheries and the Oakville Future Farmers of America chapter as reasons for her selection.
Rachel’s science teacher, Jessica Hausman, says that Rachel has been dedicated to building connections between tribal traditions and Western knowledge in her work.
Those selected for the award receive a $500 stipend, and Washington STEM will celebrate their accomplishments at their 2024 Summit Luncheon.
Washington STEM has partnered with 10 regional networks across the state to recognize the work of young women and trans/non-binary youth in STEM fields in their schools and communities.
